Wing Chun in Weston-super-Mare Since 1992
The History of Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu
Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu has a long-established connection with Weston-super-Mare, with the club’s history dating back to 1992. The club began under Sifu Bill McKay and continues today through the traditional Wing Chun lineage of Grandmaster Samuel Kwok.
The club is committed to preserving the principles of Wing Chun while providing practical, structured training for modern students. Classes are held at The Campus Sports Hall on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Over the years, the club has helped students develop Wing Chun as a complete martial art, combining traditional principles, practical application and the experience gained through decades of experience and teaching.
Our Instructors
The Weston-super-Mare club is taught by experienced instructors within Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu.
Bill McKay
Bill McKay is the founder and chief instructor of Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu.
His training and teaching have focused on maintaining the principles of traditional Wing Chun while making those principles understandable and applicable to students. His approach places importance on understanding why techniques work, rather than simply copying movements.
Bill continues to teach and oversee the development of Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu but has passed the administration and day-2-day teaching to his other instructors.
Steve Wilson
Steve Wilson is one of the senior instructors within Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu and has been involved with the organisation for many years.
Dan Bazell
Dan Bazell is a senior instructor and is a highly skilled and experienced part of the teaching team, contributing to the continued development of students within the club.
The instructors work within the same Wing Chun system and teaching structure, providing continuity between the different stages of a student's development.
Our Wing Chun Lineage
Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu follows the Wing Chun lineage associated with Grandmaster Samuel Kwok.
Samuel Kwok was a student of Grandmaster Ip Chun, son of the renowned Wing Chun practitioner Ip Man. This lineage provides the traditional foundation for the Wing Chun taught through Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu.
Lineage is an important part of a traditional system because it provides a connection between teachers and students across generations. For the club, it also provides a framework for preserving the principles, forms and concepts of Wing Chun.
Our Approach to Wing Chun
Wing Chun is a principle-based martial art. Rather than relying solely on physical strength or predetermined techniques and develops an understanding of structure, balance, positioning, timing and movement.
At Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu, these principles form the foundation of the teaching.
The aim is to develop an understanding of the art that can be applied progressively as a student's knowledge and experience increase. Technical development is therefore connected to an understanding of the principles behind each movement.
This approach allows students to study Wing Chun as a complete system, including its forms, concepts and partner exercises.
Traditional Wing Chun Training
Traditional martial arts develop through consistent practice and transmission of the skills from teacher to student.
Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu maintains the traditional Wing Chun curriculum while continuing to teach it in a way that is accessible to people today. The emphasis is on understanding the system rather than treating individual movements as techniques in isolation.
The Weston-super-Mare club is part of that continuing tradition.
The Weston-super-Mare Club Today
After more than three decades of Wing Chun Kung Fu in Weston-super-Mare, the club remains part of the local community.
The club's continuing development is supported by its instructors and by students who train within the Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu organisation.
