Sifu Bill McKay
Chief Instructor and Master Instructor
Bill McKay is the founder and Chief Instructor of Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu in Weston-super-Mare.
His martial-arts journey began in 1971 with Judo and boxing, followed by other training including Kuk Sool Won, Shotokan and Wado Ryu Karate.
Wing Chun training
Bill began in Wing Chun directly under Grandmaster Samuel Kwok in 1987.
His instructor progression includes:
- 1990 — Instructor certification
- 2007 — Senior Instructor certification
- 2010 — Master Instructor certification
Bill continues to teach regularly at Somerset Wing Chun and provides instructional direction and oversight for the club.

Bill is a member of the SKWCMAA and serves on its board.

Teaching philosophy
Bill's approach combines traditional Wing Chun with practical partner work.
Students are encouraged to understand the principles behind the movements rather than simply copying techniques.

- Bill's martial-arts experience extends across several decades.
His progression into Wing Chun followed earlier training in Judo, boxing and other styles.
That broader experience informs the way he approaches movement, training and practical application.

His role includes:

Training Under Grandmaster Samuel Kwok
GM Kwok certified me as an Instructor in 1990 and promoted
me to Senior Instructor in 2007.
In 2010 I was promoted by GM Kwok to Master Instructor and given the Chinese family name Kwok Ching Yin.
I was honoured to be certified internationally as a Master of the Wing Chun by the World Wide Martial Arts Council in 2012.
I have promoted instructors, travelled to Hong Kong and mainland China, and continue to work closely with the Samuel Kwok Wing Chun Martial Arts (SKWCMAA) Masters worldwide.
I became a Permanent Member of the Ip Chun Academy in 2000 and was recognised for my efforts by becoming a Hall of Honour Member in 2018.
Over the years I’ve trained extensively with both of my Sifu's teachers, GMs Ip Chun and GM Ip Ching (deceased).
