Self Defence Training
Everyday Objects and UK Law
In addition to unarmed training and traditional weapons, Somerset Wing Chun Kung Fu teaches awareness of how everyday objects may be used defensively if necessary. This training develops adaptability and confidence, not the carrying of weapons.
Everyday Objects
Items such as belts, umbrellas, walking sticks, bottles, or poles may be used in a defensive situation if they are immediately available. These are not weapons when carried for normal purposes, but their use must always be justified by the situation.
Legal Considerations
Under UK law, it is an offence to carry an offensive weapon in public without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. An offensive weapon includes any item made, adapted, or intended to cause injury.
Carrying any item specifically for self-defence is unlikely to be considered a valid reason.
Everyday items may become offensive weapons if carried with intent to use them to cause injury.
Use of Force
Individuals may use reasonable force to defend themselves or others where necessary. This includes using an object “in the moment” if required.
Force must be proportionate to the threat, and excessive force may be unlawful.
Key Principles
Do not carry items with intent to use them as weapons
Ensure you have a legitimate reason for any item you carry
Use force only when necessary and proportionate
Prioritise avoidance and escape
All training must be applied responsibly and within the law.
