Self-Defence Classes in Weston-super-Mare

Looking for self-defence classes in Weston-super-Mare? At Somerset Wing Chun, we teach practical personal-safety skills through the principles and training methods of Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Our approach goes beyond physical techniques, emphasising awareness, recognising potential risks, maintaining distance, avoidance and de-escalation. Where physical skills are required, training develops movement, positioning, balance, control and the ability to respond effectively under pressure.

Our classes welcome complete beginners and experienced practitioners aged 16 and over, including people with no previous martial arts experience.

We provide a controlled environment to develop and practise practical skills. We believe physical confrontation should always be a last resort.

Self-Defence Starts With Awareness

Being aware of your surroundings and recognising potentially difficult situations can help you make safer decisions.

Our approach encourages students to consider:

  • Awareness of people and situations around them.

  • Recognising changes in behaviour or circumstances.

  • Maintaining appropriate distance and personal space.

  • Avoiding unnecessary confrontation.

  • Identifying opportunities to leave an uncomfortable situation.

The ability to avoid a confrontation is an important part of personal safety.

Avoidance and De-escalation

Physical confrontation should be a last resort wherever possible.

Creating distance, communicating calmly and moving away from a situation can help prevent unnecessary escalation.

We encourage students to consider their options and understand that avoiding confrontation is often the safest response.

Developing Practical Physical Skills

If a situation cannot be avoided, movement, positioning and balance become important considerations.

Through controlled Wing Chun exercises, students practise:

  • Maintaining balance and stable positioning.
  • Managing distance.
  • Protecting themselves through movement and positioning.
  • Responding to physical pressure.
  • Developing coordination and controlled techniques.

These skills are introduced progressively through individual and partner exercises.

Self-Defence Training for Beginners

Our classes welcome men and women aged 16 and over. Training is introduced in a structured way, allowing everyone to become familiar with the exercises and develop their skills over time.

You don't need to be strong, particularly fit, or experienced in martial arts to begin training.

The added comma improves the list structure.

Our instructors introduce exercises in a structured way, helping students become familiar with the training and develop at their own pace.

The classes are open to men and women aged 16 and over. We aim to provide a friendly environment where students can ask questions, practise and improve without feeling intimidated.

Community and Organisational Training

Alongside our regular classes, Somerset Wing Chun has delivered training sessions and seminars for RAF personnel and local community groups.

We can discuss sessions tailored to the requirements of organisations and groups interested in personal-safety training.

A Responsible Approach to Personal Safety

No martial art can guarantee protection in every situation. Our aim is to develop awareness, understanding and practical skills while emphasising responsible behaviour and avoiding unnecessary confrontation.
